The honest answer depends entirely on how long you need the car, and most comparison sites won’t tell you that because they only sell one of the options.
Under a week? Daily hire. Nothing beats it for a weekend or a few days, and you shouldn’t be reading this page.
One to two weeks? It’s close. Weekly hire rates get better, but so does the per-day cost of a month.
More than two weeks? A monthly term is almost always cheaper, and the gap widens fast. Daily hire is priced on the assumption you’ll bring the car back on Monday. A monthly rate isn’t.
If you’re in the third group, here’s how it works.
Daily rental prices in short bursts because that’s the risk the hire company is taking — the car has to be cleaned, checked and turned around constantly, and priced for the weeks it might sit on the lot.
A monthly term removes that. You have the car, we’re not re-letting it every three days, and the price reflects it. So the per-day figure drops considerably once you’re past a fortnight, and you get a newer car for it, delivered to your address rather than collected from a desk at the airport or the docks.
The cheapest headline figure isn’t always the cheapest total, so it’s worth comparing like for like.
Included in your monthly payment: the car, servicing, maintenance, road tax, MOT and breakdown cover. Nothing added later for a service or an MOT falling due mid-term.
Not included: insurance, fuel or charging. Upfront, there’s a refundable damage deposit alongside your first month, and you get that back at the end.
Where daily hire often catches people is the extras — excess waivers, additional driver fees, young driver surcharges, fuel policies, one-way charges. Add those up over a month and the cheap daily rate frequently isn’t.
Worth saying plainly, because in Southampton it applies to a lot of people.
If you work at sea, offshore or on any rotation that takes you away for weeks, a car you own costs you every month whether you’re home or not — finance, insurance, tax and depreciation all carry on while it sits on the driveway. Four months of that a year is a substantial sum for a vehicle doing nothing.
A monthly term simply stops when you hand it back. Take a car for the months you’re ashore, return it before you go, take another when you’re next home. Terms run from one month, three, six or nine months, up to twelve or eighteen.
The same logic applies to seasonal work, a fixed-term contract at the port or the hospital, or a university year that runs nine months rather than thirty-six.
A few things genuinely move the price:
Pick the right size. The temptation is to take something bigger than you need. Around Portswood, Highfield, Freemantle and Shirley the streets are tight and largely on-street anyway, so a smaller car is usually both cheaper and easier to live with.
Be realistic about mileage. Allowances start at 1,000 miles a month on terms under a year and 833 a month from twelve months up, with higher bands available — and exceeding whichever you pick costs extra per mile — 65p plus VAT on 1 and 3 month agreements, 40p plus VAT on the longer terms. Understating it to shave a few pounds off the monthly is the most common way people end up paying more overall.
Consider longer. Per-month costs generally fall as the term lengthens. If you know you need six months, booking six is usually cheaper than rolling three twice.
Look at electric. If your mileage is mostly local and you can charge at home, running costs drop noticeably. See the electric options — though if you’re leaving the car for long stretches or taking it on the Isle of Wight ferry, think through charging at both ends first.
Our range covers city cars, saloons, SUVs and 4x4s, all new or near-new, plus work vans on the same monthly terms. Prices vary by vehicle and term length, and availability moves — see what’s currently available for live figures.
Cheapest car rental in Southampton, car leasing, car subscription, short term car hire — people search all of them looking for one thing: a car for a set period without a long contract.
Across Southampton and Hampshire — Portswood, Highfield, Bassett, Shirley, Freemantle, Bitterne, Woolston, Swaythling and Millbrook — and out to Eastleigh, Totton, Hedge End, Romsey, Winchester and Fareham. Home address or workplace. Arrives valeted and ready to drive, with no counter to queue at, and we collect on request.
Everything is quoted ex VAT, since that’s the figure a business actually budgets to.
Reclaiming is where it gets particular. A car available for private use normally allows only half the VAT on the rentals to be recovered. Where maintenance appears as its own charge it’s treated differently — though not with us, as it sits within the single monthly payment. And if the job could be done in a van, the position is more generous again.
VAT on lease cars has the full picture.
Offered as guidance rather than tax advice. Run it past your accountant before committing.

Past a fortnight, yes — often considerably. Daily rates assume the car comes back within days. Ours is priced by the month, delivered to your address, with servicing, road tax and breakdown cover included.
Yes — it’s the same product, usually called subscription at the shorter end of the range.
For a weekend, no — use a hire company. For anything beyond a couple of weeks, our per-day cost is usually well below daily hire, and the comparison gets more favourable the longer you need the car. We’d rather tell you that than pretend we’re the answer to every situation.
Per month, longer terms are generally cheaper than shorter ones. Per total spend, the cheapest is the shortest term that actually covers your need — there’s no value in paying for months you won’t use.
No — there are no hidden costs. The monthly figure covers the car, servicing, maintenance, road tax and MOT. You cover insurance and fuel. The only variable is excess mileage if you go over your allowance, and we’ll tell you that rate before you commit.
Not with us — there is always a deposit. You pay a refundable damage deposit up front with your first month, returned when the car goes back. A provider promising nothing upfront has usually recovered it inside the monthly figure, where it’s harder to see.
Yes — we credit check every Southampton car lease agreement. Providers who skip the check normally charge a bigger deposit or a higher monthly to price in the risk. Compare the total cost of an agreement, not the headline monthly.
Yes, and it’s usually the cheapest way to do it. Tell us your rotation and we’ll match the term to it.
Yes — you can take the car on the Isle of Wight ferry. Let us know if you’re planning regular crossings when you book.
Yes — change vehicle at the end of a period, extend if the situation continues, or hand it back. Tell us early either way.
Over a decade of year-round driving, no — buying wins. Over a few months, or where the car would sit idle for part of the year, this is cheaper and considerably less hassle. Our guide to leasing versus buying sets out the trade-offs properly, and subscription versus lease explains the difference between the two models.
Yes — sole traders, partnerships, limited companies and PLCs all qualify. Prices are quoted ex VAT, the credit assessment is done on the business where applicable, and you can stagger terms across a fleet however suits you.
It isn’t, provided the payments work across the months you’re taking the car. That’s rather the point of matching the term to the rotation. Getting a lease car without a job sets out the evidence side.
And if you're wondering who's behind all this: Drive Subscribe is an ACL Automotive brand — the team that runs short-term leasing for some of the biggest names in the business. The car's short-term. We're not.
