Here’s the thing about a car in Oxford: it isn’t really for Oxford.
The centre is a Zero Emission Zone, where anything that isn’t electric pays a daily charge between 7am and 7pm, and the scheme is set to expand across most of the city centre. Add medieval street widths, residents’ permits and some of the best park-and-ride provision in the country, and driving into town is rarely the sensible option anyway.
What a car here is really for is everything outside the ring road — Harwell, Abingdon, Bicester, the villages, the site that no bus reaches, the weekend. And for a lot of people that need lasts months rather than years.
That’s the gap we fill. Most people searching for a rental car in Oxford want something longer and cheaper than daily hire: a car for a few months on one monthly payment. Terms available are one, three, six and nine months, up to twelve or eighteen..
Daily car rental in Oxford makes sense for a weekend. It stops making sense somewhere around the second week, because you’re paying a daily rate that assumes you’ll bring the car back on Monday.
A monthly term is priced on the assumption you won’t. The per-day cost drops considerably, the car is new or near-new rather than whatever’s on the lot, and it arrives at your address instead of you queuing at a desk. Servicing, maintenance, road tax, MOT and breakdown cover are all inside the monthly figure. Insurance, fuel and any ZEZ charges are yours, and you pay a refundable damage deposit alongside your first month, returned at the end. A mileage allowance is part of every agreement. Excess is 65p per mile plus VAT on 1 and 3 month terms, 40p plus VAT on the longer ones. The allowance starts at 1,000 miles a month on terms under twelve months and 833 a month above that, with higher bands available.
The trade is that you commit to a term rather than a weekend. If you genuinely only need a car for three days, use a hire company. If it’s three months, this is cheaper.
Visiting academics and researchers. Oxford runs on fixed-term posts — postdocs, fellowships, funded projects, sabbaticals. People arrive for a defined period, often from abroad, needing transport but with no interest in buying and selling a car inside eighteen months.
Hospital and research staff. Bank, locum and fixed-term roles across the John Radcliffe, Churchill and the wider trust, plus the science and biotech cluster around the city.
Students and postgrads. Terms here are short and the year is not thirty-six months long.
People who commute in from outside. Oxford house prices push a lot of staff out to Abingdon, Witney, Bicester and Didcot, and the journey back in isn’t always a rail journey.
Businesses. New starters who need a car immediately, project teams that scale, and work vans on the same monthly terms.
If your driving is mostly out of the city — the A34, A40, A420 or the M40 — then economy and comfort over distance matter most. If you’re regularly parking in Jericho, Headington or Cowley, width and visibility matter more than anything else; those streets punish a big car daily.
Our range covers both — city cars, saloons, SUVs and 4x4s, all new or near-new.
One Oxford-specific point worth making: if you’ll be driving into the Zero Emission Zone with any regularity, an electric car pays nothing where a petrol or diesel pays the daily charge. Over a few months that’s a meaningful sum. It only works if you have somewhere to charge, so check that first — but if you do, it changes the maths.
Oxford car rental, rental cars in Oxford, car leasing, car subscription, short term car hire — the phrase varies, the need doesn’t. A car for a defined stretch of months, on one payment.
Across Oxford and Oxfordshire — Jericho, Headington, Cowley, Summertown, Marston, Iffley, Botley and Wolvercote — and out to Kidlington, Abingdon, Witney, Bicester, Didcot, Thame and Wantage. Home or office, whichever is more convenient to receive it. It reaches you valeted and ready to use, and a single call arranges collection.
Ex-VAT pricing is what you’ll see quoted, with the VAT-inclusive figure shown next to it.
The recovery position comes down to three questions. Can the car be used privately? If so, expect to reclaim half the VAT on the hire charges. Worth checking whether a provider splits maintenance onto its own line, because that element is handled differently. Ours never is — it’s inside the monthly figure. Is it a car or a van? Vans are outside the restriction and generally allow the lot.
VAT on lease cars goes through each.

Past a fortnight, considerably. Rental is priced on a weekend return. We price by the month, deliver to your address rather than a desk, and include servicing, road tax and breakdown cover.
Yes — same product, same inclusions. Subscription usually describes the shorter, more flexible terms.
Daily hire is priced by the day and gets expensive fast — fine for a weekend, poor value beyond a fortnight. Our terms are priced by the month: cheaper per day, a newer car, and delivered to your address rather than collected from a rental desk. Anyone needing a car in Oxford for more than a couple of weeks is usually better off this way.
If you drive a non-electric car into those central streets during charging hours, yes — it’s charged by the council, not by us, and no leasing or rental company can waive it. Electric cars pay nothing. Most people simply avoid the zone, which is straightforward given the park-and-ride network.
Yes — that’s what these terms are for. Choose the length that matches and hand the car back at the end. Seeing the term through to its end date costs you nothing.
There is a deposit, and it is refundable. It sits alongside your first month at the start and comes back at the end, covering early cancellation, missed payments or damage beyond ordinary wear.
Yes — every Oxford car lease application includes a standard credit check. Anyone offering to skip it is generally recovering the risk through a larger deposit or a higher rate.
Yes, across Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties. Give us the delivery address at booking and we’ll check access before the day.
Switching at the end of a term is straightforward. Changing during one is possible too, and usually cheaper than paying charges at the end. There are longer terms if your stay extends.
Flexibility and lower risk. You get a modern car without gambling thousands on a purchase, and you can step away when circumstances change — which suits anyone here on a fixed-term basis. If you’re still deciding, leasing versus buying covers the maths and subscription versus lease covers the mechanics.
Yes — sole traders, partnerships, limited companies and PLCs. Quotes come to you ex VAT, underwriting runs on the business where that applies, and there’s nothing stopping you holding several vehicles on different end dates.
It’s a common enough situation that we’re set up for it. Affordability and identity are what’s assessed rather than the length of your UK history. Getting a lease car without a job covers the evidence.
And if you're wondering who's behind all this: Drive Subscribe is an ACL Automotive brand — the team that runs short-term leasing for some of the biggest names in the business. The car's short-term. We're not.
