Sheffield is hard on cars. Seven hills, gradients that would count as a mountain pass in most cities, and a climb home to Crookes or Walkley that a clutch feels every single day. Add the roads west into the Peak, which see more snow than almost anywhere else in England, and you have a place where cars wear out faster than the mileage suggests.
Which is a decent argument for not owning one. On a short term lease you pay a fixed monthly amount, drive it up whatever hill you live on, and hand it back. What that did to the clutch, the brakes and the resale value isn’t your problem. Run it for one month, three, six or nine months, up to twelve or eighteen.
Stop-start climbing is the hardest work a car does. Clutches wear faster, brakes wear faster, and automatic gearboxes work harder — none of which shows up on a mileage reading, all of which shows up in a bill or in what a buyer will offer you.
A lease turns that into someone else’s arithmetic. Servicing and maintenance sit inside your monthly payment, along with the car itself, road tax, MOT and breakdown cover. Insurance, fuel or charging stay with you, and you pay a refundable damage deposit alongside your first month, returned when the car goes back. If something wears out in the meantime, that’s ours to sort. Mileage allowances apply on every term, with excess charged at 65p a mile plus VAT on 1 and 3 month agreements and 40p plus VAT on the longer ones. Allowances start at 1,000 miles a month on shorter terms, 833 a month from twelve months upward, with higher bands to choose from.
People who need to get to the Peak, not around the city. The tram and buses handle a lot of Sheffield life. What they don’t handle is Hathersage on a Saturday, the crag, the trailhead, the walk that starts twenty minutes past the last stop. A few months at a time suits that pattern.
Students and postgrads. Two universities and one of the bigger student populations in the country. Term time is around nine months, not thirty-six.
NHS and care staff. Bank, locum and fixed-term roles across the Northern General, the Hallamshire and community services.
Contractors and engineering staff. The advanced manufacturing cluster east of the city runs a lot of project-based work with defined end dates. The car can end when the project does.
Businesses. New starters who need a car immediately, teams that scale in waves, and work vans on the same flexible terms — worth reading the note below if vans are what you need.
This catches people out, so it’s worth being clear. Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone charges vans, taxis, minibuses, coaches and HGVs, but not private cars. If you drive a car, you pay nothing.
If you need a van, it matters a great deal: a non-compliant van pays a daily charge, and the zone operates around the clock. Every van we supply meets the standard, so that charge simply doesn’t apply — which over a few months of working in the city is a substantial difference.
Gradient changes what matters. Something underpowered will struggle on the climbs and you’ll notice it daily; something very large will struggle on the terraced streets around Nether Edge, Sharrow and Meersbrook where parking is on-street and tight. The sweet spot is usually smaller than people expect but with enough torque to pull away uphill without drama.
Our range covers it — city cars, saloons, SUVs and 4x4s, all new or near-new. Electric cars are genuinely well suited to Sheffield: instant torque makes hill starts effortless, and regenerative braking recovers energy on the way back down, so the descents partly pay for the climbs. As always it depends on having somewhere to charge, so check that before deciding.
Car lease deals in Sheffield, car leasing, car subscription, monthly car rental, short term car hire — one product underneath: a car for a defined number of months, on one monthly payment.
Across Sheffield and South Yorkshire — Crookes, Walkley, Broomhill, Fulwood, Ecclesall, Nether Edge, Sharrow, Meersbrook, Woodseats, Hillsborough, Stannington and Heeley — and out to Dronfield, Chesterfield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Hathersage. To the house or to work — whichever you’d rather. Cleaned, ready and delivered — no depot involved, and one call ends it.
The prices here exclude VAT. Most of our business customers reclaim it, so that’s the meaningful figure.
What you recover depends on the vehicle and how it’s used. A car available for private use generally allows 50% recovery on the hire charges. That restriction can work differently for maintenance billed on its own line — not something you’ll see here, as ours is included in the monthly price. Vans sit outside the car rules altogether and are treated more favourably.
Our VAT guide covers the specifics.

It’s the cheaper answer beyond a couple of weeks. Rental prices by the day; we price by the month, deliver to your address, and include servicing, road tax and breakdown cover in the figure.
Yes — the same cars and the same inclusions, with subscription usually meaning the shorter terms.
Not in a car — private cars aren’t charged. Vans are, unless they meet the emissions standard, and all of ours do.
Servicing and maintenance are, which matters more here than in flatter cities. Normal wear from ordinary use is expected. Damage isn’t — kerbed alloys, dents, tears — and we’ll set out the standard when you book rather than at collection.
Yes — Sheffield lease terms start at one month and run to eighteen. Choose the length that matches your situation and hand the car back at the end — there’s no penalty for an agreement simply reaching its end date.
No — there is always a deposit, and if someone’s advertising otherwise, look closely at what it actually costs. A deposit against damage is payable with the first month, and it’s refundable. Held against early cancellation, missed payments or damage, and returned in full at the end. Offers with nothing to pay at the start have generally priced it into the monthly instead.
Yes — a credit check is part of every Sheffield car lease application, and it is quick. Compare any offer on the total cost of the agreement rather than the advertised monthly.
Rental prices in days because the car is turned around constantly. A monthly term does not, so the per-day cost falls once you are past a fortnight.
Yes, across South Yorkshire, north Derbyshire and the surrounding area. Let us know where it’s going when you book and we’ll sort the rest.
Yes — each short period ends cleanly and you can change car, or move onto a longer term.
Flexibility and lower risk. Newer car, no thousands wagered on a purchase, and you can hand it back when things shift. There’s a fuller comparison in leasing versus buying, and subscription versus lease sets out how the two differ.
It can — the agreement can be in the company’s name. We deal with everything from sole traders to PLCs, quote excluding VAT, and underwrite the business where relevant. Vehicles don’t have to run to matching terms.
No — being a student or on a fixed-term post won’t stop you leasing a car. The check is whether the monthly payment is comfortable, not whether the job is permanent. Getting a lease car without a job explains what to have ready.
And if you're wondering who's behind all this: Drive Subscribe is an ACL Automotive brand — the team that runs short-term leasing for some of the biggest names in the business. The car's short-term. We're not.
